The Spectacled Cobra, locally known in many areas of Bangladesh as খৈয়া গোখরা, is one of the most well-known venomous snakes of South Asia. It belongs to the cobra family (Elapidae) and is medically important due to its powerful neurotoxic venom.

The name comes from the spectacle-shaped marking on the back of the hood. When threatened, the snake spreads its hood and this marking becomes visible, looking like eyeglasses or binoculars.

Spectacled cobras help maintain ecosystem balance by controlling rodent populations that damage crops and spread disease.
